Neal’s Story

November 04, 2014 / by Lou Scotto

“I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for Center for Hospice Care.  I believe wholeheartedly that you’ve already extended my life well beyond the medical prognosis.  I’ve been in Hospice care for several months now.  The comfort and care provided by your nurses, aides, and social workers have made all the difference.  Everybody is engaged in my welfare…

At first I approached Hospice cautiously.  But I had watched you care for a friend of mine, Roger, who had Parkinson’s.  The last time I saw him was the day before he died – he looked so peaceful.  That really impressed me…

If you have a terminal illness – no matter what it is – get with Hospice.  And the sooner the better.  The care you get will extend your life…

For a while I was scared.  But Lydia, the Hospice spiritual counselor, got me through the tough stretch…

And there’s so much more Hospice can do for you.  I’m poor – but Debbie, my Hospice social worker got me CCCI benefits, which has provided me a household helper – a fellow who comes in a few hours a day Monday through Thursday to cook, clean, do the laundry.  Debbie helped me get into this apartment, in Plainfield.  Hospice has helped me to continue to live independently, so I wouldn’t have to go into a nursing home.   This means that my sons can come over with dinner tonight and we can watch a ballgame together…

And Cyndia, my new Hospice social worker, helped to expedite delivery of this wheelchair from the VA.  It’s given me back my freedom – to go to the grocery store or the drugstore.  And I’m working with Nancy, my Hospice nurse, to arrange one more trip to Maine.  She’s connected me with a Hospice there – in Lewiston – where I can stay.  I’m planning for four days there, around Columbus Day, when it’s peak foliage…

I’d brag on Hospice care to anyone who’ll listen.  Center for Hospice Care is a great outfit…”
