
History of Center for Hospice Care
Formerly Hospice Southeastern Connecticut
- December 1985 – Hospice of Southeastern Connecticut began serving patients, coalition of 12 home care agencies and L+M Hospital, Board comprised of agency directors and representatives, employed a Hospice Coordinator
- August 1987 - Office in L+M Hospital on 1st floor, employee now an RN Coordinator who taught Home Care Agency RNs to do Hospice care, hired part-time secretary
- July 1989 - Hired a Fund-Raiser Coordinator, Hospice Coordinator took role as Administrator
- October 1989 - Board voted to become an independent agency to achieve Medicare Hospice Certification and Board became all community representatives
- December 1989 - Hired 1st full-time nurse
- June 1990 - Became a Medicare Certified Hospice (7th program in CT)
- September 1990 - Began Community Bereavement groups
- August 1995 - Full CHAP accreditation with 10 commendations
- August 1995 - Opened 2nd office site in Norwich, CT expanded service territory to include all New London County
- August 1996 - Moved both office sites (New London and Norwich) to one central office in Uncasville, CT
- June 1999 - Affirmative affiliation vote for two sole members (L+M and Backus) with Hospice Southeastern Connecticut Board of Directors
- January 2005 – Organization launched Community Liaison position and Skilled Nursing Facility Team Initiative
- October 2005 – Another hospice program opens in New London County
- February 2008 - Moved into newly built office building and Community Bereavement Center in Norwich on a gift of land from Sts. Peter & Paul parish
- June 2012 – Connecticut revised Hospice Residence Regulations
- February 2013 – Logo and name change to Center for Hospice Care
- March 2014 – Launch Palliative Care Program in partnership with Backus Hospital
- August 2014 – Opening of the community Healing Garden
- September 2014 – Received the Hartford Courant’s Top Workplace Award
- May 2015 – Began $7.5M campaign for Hospice House
- May 2015 – Terminated affiliation with L+M and Backus
- June 2015 – Closed Palliative Care Program at Backus
- September 2015 - Received the Hartford Courant’s Top Workplace Award
- May 2016 – Public launch of Hospice House Campaign
- January 2017 – Suspend Hospice House Campaign
- September 2017 - Received the Hartford Courant’s Top Workplace Award
- September 2018 – Received the Hartford Courant’s Top Workplace Award
- March 2019 – Affiliated with Hartford HealthCare at Home
- April 2019 – Carol Mahier President / CEO Retired after 32 years with the organization
