Complementary Therapies Program
Hospice Southeastern Connecticut offers a variety of complementary therapies that are used in conjunction with the patient's prescribed medical treatment. Many patients find that using one or a combination of complementary therapies, provides an enhanced sense of physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. All therapies are administered by skilled professionals trained in the various disciplines.
Complementary Therapies offered by Hospice Southeastern Connecticut include:
-
Massage Therapy
Therapeutic Massage is the gentle manual manipulation of the body’s soft tissue. Administered by licensed massage therapists, the massage can inspire a deep sense of inner calm and relaxation.
- Aromatherapy
Using essential oils derived from plant essences, Aromatherapy is recognized for its physiological and psychological benefits. The aromas are absorbed through the nose and the skin to help promote a positive mental state and relaxed mind.
- Energy Work (Reiki and Therapeutic Touch)
Reiki (pronounced ray-key) and Therapeutic Touch (Healing Touch) are techniques of stress reduction and relaxation. It is administered by “lying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us. These therapies treat the whole person including body, emotions, mind, and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation
and feelings of peace, security and well-being.
- Reflexology
Reflexology is a form of natural therapy that treats specific reflex points in the feet. Based on Chinese theory, the therapy suggests that the entire body is represented by a map on the feet. Following the body’s map, the reflexologist applies gentle pressure to the reflex points, producing a sense of relaxation.
-
Pet Therapy
Our trained and certified therapy dogs and their trainers offer patients unconditional affection and a warm and comforting presence at the patient’s bedside.
