In February 2007, Hospice Southeastern Connecticut accepted a gift of 6.4 acres of property from Saints Peter & Paul Parish and the Norwich Diocese. The donated land will enable Hospice Southeastern Connecticut to offer the entire community enhanced services and increased accessibility to hospice care and bereavement support. Hospice broke ground April 27, 2007 on an 8,000 square foot administrative office and bereavement center and hopes to build an adjoining hospice residence facility in the future.
Since 1985, Hospice Southeastern Connecticut has provided hospice and palliative care and bereavement services to over 5,500 patients (and their families) in New London County. Patients have been cared for by the Inter-disciplinary team of Hospice & Palliative Care certified nurses, physicians, licensed medical social workers, Hospice & Palliative care certified home health aides, hospice chaplains, trained volunteers and bereavement counselors. Most patients have been cared for in their own homes, some in area facilities. Care is provided in the home regardless of a person’s insurance or ability to pay. Many times care can also be provided to residents in a Skilled Nursing facility.
Hospice Southeastern Connecticut provides bereavement support to families of patients on our program for thirteen months after the death of their loved ones. Since 1991 Hospice Southeastern Connecticut has also offered Bereavement Support Groups throughout the area free of charge to anyone in the community who has suffered grief or loss.
The new administrative office and community bereavement center will serve as a resource to all of New London county offering bereavement and caregiver support groups, expressive arts for children and teenagers, education and a resource library in an easily accessible venue.
